Jaw Pain and Clicking- Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD / TMJ)

  • Do you suffer from headaches?
  • Is chewing food uncomfortable or painful?
  • Do you hear popping, clicking, or crackling sounds when you move your jaw?
  • Are you unable to open your mouth freely, smoothly and as wide as you need to while eating or yawning?

If you answered YES to any of these questions you may be one of the many suffering from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD).

What Causes TMD?

The TMJ is one of the most complex joints in the body. It is constructed of two bones. The mandible (jaw), and the temporal bone of the skull. A disc sits in the middle of the two bones.  Disorders of this joint are very common.

Causes include:

  • Dental work (ie. tooth extractions, implants etc.)
  • Clenching or grinding teeth
  • Cross bite
  • Stress or nervous habits (ie. nail biting)
  • Excessive chewing
  • Trauma / whiplash injuries
  • Blunt force to the face
  • Sporting injuries (ie. Volleyball to the face)
  • Posture
  • Osteoarthritis/ Rheumatoid arthritis

What if my jaw “Clicks/ Pops” but it doesn’t hurt?

Clicking in the jaw indicates that the disc between the mandible and temporal bone is out of place. This creates bone on bone contact and over time can lead to arthritic changes in the TMJ. Arthritic changes will reduce the overall function of the TMJ resulting in pain. Early intervention restores normal alignment and function of the joint, thereby creating a nutritious environment for the disc.
