Lower Back Pain

Did you know that 1 in 6 Australians had back problems in 2017-2018? (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2019). It is also estimated that 70-90% of people will suffer from lower back pain at some point in their lives (AIHW, 2019).

Did you know that Australia spends $4.8 Billion per year on management for low back pain? (Monash University News and Events, 2018).

With such a high burden on our population why is back pain not always so simple to fix? You may be thinking to yourself ‘my friend Bob said he had the exact same pain and this particular treatment fixed him, so why isn’t it helping me?’.   The simple answer is, there is no one size fits all treatment.

Low back pain can be caused by multiple different factors and is often more complex than labelling one specific structure as the ‘culprit’. While medical imaging has helped immensely in diagnosis of conditions, it doesn’t always help the treatment approach. Theoretically if it did, then we would be able to prescribe the same rehabilitation program for everyone with a disc prolapse and it would work just as well for every person. But this is not what happens and mostly this is because we each have different variations in how we move, what tasks we are required to do on a daily basis, past injury history, current exercise demands, other health conditions, stress and other factors. The body is a complex system and while each human shares similarities, each individual can have vastly different causes of pain. However, the good news is, it is not all doom and gloom!

It has been theorised that adjacent segments of the spine can cause dysfunction in the lower back. For example, stiffness in the mid back (also known as the thoracic spine) can lead to excessive compensatory increases in movement in the lower back which can contribute to pain. Altered movement patterns from previous injuries can also sometimes play a role in our pain. To address your pain, we take the time to not only find the root cause of your pain and aim for pain relief; but also to teach you how to retrain motor patterns, strengthen the appropriate muscles (when needed), and relax overactive muscles when appropriate to aid in prevention of recurring pain.
